Hi guys!
FYI - For the Final, you need to know the information Cazden includes on homeopathic herbs, and their uses for the voice in particular. Any comments, questions, and/ or confusions about these chapters? Please comment below!
Thanks,
Joanna
I thought it was particularly interesting how Cazden talked about certain herbs and spices that are healthy for the voice&body in general. I know that I am always looking for a way to stay healthy. These readings just confirm how important to voice is. It makes me put forth the same energy&determination toward my voice as I do to my body. It also adds to the importance of the acting career and how to maintain a HEALTHY career.
ReplyDeleteThe more we read, the more i realize how easy it is to treat my voice and body the right way, and wonder why i have so much trouble doing so....or even remembering to do so. I liked this passage specifically because she talked about natural healers. one, they are easily obtained because they were out here on god's big green earth, and two, some are common spices and herbs that we may already use for pleasure and taste. I hate that when i get caught up with the stresses of life, the first thing i chose to blow off is the health...and the part of my body that gets the shaft quicker and stronger than any other is my throat/voice.
ReplyDeleteThe section of the reading that talked about having a sound mind and sound body stood out to me. I know I've definitely had moments where I was very stressed out and got sick easily because of the stress in my body. Also when she talks about exercise, and how things like yoga can really help us to be in tune and aware of bodies it made me think about all of the physical things we do in class to condition and become aware of our bodies and how that affects our voice. The list of herbs was also very helpful!
ReplyDeleteI think its really important to remember the idea of "Sound Mind, Sound Body", especially in stressful times such as approaching finals. I know that personally when I am feeling overwhelmed or stressed it takes a serious toll on my body and voice which makes it harder to go on with day to day activities. I also appreciated the list of pros and cons with certain herbs. I had no idea that echinacea was not only helpful but could also be dangerous with long time use. I found it interesting that swimming uses a similar breathing method to voice training. I did swim team all throughout high school and it never occurred to me that it could be helping my voice. Finally, I have been having a rude awakening of how important sleep is to our voice. If I sleep only a few hours I will wake up and barely have a voice at all.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I liked how they included optimism as one of the "remedies" for the voice. When reading it, I kept thinking about how we do the sun salutation and what that must do to us in terms of stress relief. Also when we did some visualization earlier in the semester with the chakras and sending heat to different parts of the body, and how that may at times seem just like an exercise, but it really goes beyond that. I didn't think one could overuse their voice just by talking too much, like it is suggested in the travel section. I would have never have guess that the voice could take a hit just by that, so I will have to be more conscious of that when I need my voice to be in top shape.
ReplyDeleteI found this reading to be very informative. I thought it was interesting that traditional Western medicine is usually best at diagnosis because its specific and symptom-related, where as "holistic" approaches usually help treat a number of things of a person. Something I was suprised to find out, was the fact that the optimistic affirmation and counseling is used in medical settings to enhance treatment . It really emphasized the fact that having a healthy or "sound" mind, helps you to have a healthy body.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lauren. These recent reading are opening my eyes up to so many things about our instrument and the way we should treat it. I particularly like reading about how to not overuse or overexert your voice because I'm a loud (and sometimes excessive) talker and often notice weeeird things going on. Sleep is also a huge problem for me. Of course, being in college, most of us don't get the right amount of sleep, which can really take a toll on vocal rest and strength.
ReplyDeleteI was intriqued by the proven fact that Western medicine in fact helps better than the pharmacy meds all the time. I also love how the voice becomes healthier and more powerful with your physical body as well. A.K.A i am going to loose more weight!!! And treat my body and voice good!
