  1. I found this reading very interesting in that Cazden talks about the biological aspects of how our voices and digestive systems work together. I never knoew just how important water was to the vocal process and the restorative vocal process at that. I also didn't realize how dangerous acid reflux could be for the voice especially in the long term. It was interesting to read about how every part of our body affects other parts, and particuarly that what we eat and what goes down the esophagus into our digestive track can affect our larynx and vocal folds.

  2. I found this reading to be very informative on basic eating patterns and how they can affect your vocal performance. Before loosing weight I did pretty much everything you were not suppose to do according to Cazden. Ironically, I started trying to loose weight and after reading this piece of the book I realized that intuitively I was doing the exact same things as Cazden teaches.

As far as drinking is concerned I have noticed that because I really do not drink a lot of alcohol anymore I have more energy. I have a weakness for soda and I have cut back a lot. However, I would like to wing myself off the soda completely. I rarely drink coffee either.

All in all I enjoyed the reading and it taught me a great deal of basic voice needs as far as healthy eating and drinking choices are concerned.

  3. I am definately guilty of liquid courage before singing in bars and casinos... It makes my jaw loosen up, and takes off the edge. But I will definately take Cazden's word for it when she says it's not really helping my voice as much as I may think. I will start trying to drink more water too. half my weight in ounces? Crazy! Didn't realize i needed that much.

  5. I'll admit I was one of those people who thought it would help my voice if I drank tea when my throat was sore. I guess now that I actually think about it, it makes sense since they are two completely different pathways. That's main purpose of the larynx after all, to make sure something isn't going down the wrong pipe.

  6. I seriously wonder why it never crossed my mind that the things i put in my throat and physically subject my larynx to could ever potentially effect my throat and larynx....sounds kind of stupid doesn't it? These readings help me understand just how sensitive our voices are, and just how much abuse they endure in the average day. I can accept the harsh truth about how often i am sick and how often my throat is not up to the job now, because im aware of how difficult it can be to treat it the correct way. I actually can tell a difference now that i think about it, when im drinking a lot of water for practices and conditioning, i usually feel a lot better in the sinus and throat areas. it's when im home for the weekend veggin out on bad foods and not getting enough water that i start to feel it in my throat. I guess because our voices are the most important tool we have, they are too the most fragile. that seems to be how most of life works when you think about it!

  7. I found it really interesting that she talked about acid reflux because I suffer from it. I can feel when I have really bad heartburn that my throat is burning. It's so hard to support your voice that way. I also found it interesting that there are vocal effects of drinking coffee and alcohol. I think most of us do drink those things and we don't think about the fact that it could ruin our voices. It definitely made me think more about what I put into my body.

  8. I have always thought of the throat a seperate system than one that is attached to my digestive system when that is actually the begininng of that system! Anyways, it's pieces like this one that make me think about things that are so obvious, yet I hadn't ever taken the time to put the piece together. Something that was like an "oh, duh" moment for me was the part of the milk and how that produces phlem and that can affect the voice. I knew that milk did that and when I am sick I try avoid milk for that reason, but I hadn't thought about it in terms of voice performance. Nor did I think that acid reflux had such a impact on the voice. It's kind of scary to know that you could have the symptoms of it though without actually having acid reflux and it can still damage your throat!

  9. I found this reading interesting and downright scary. I didn't realize how bad acid was for the voice and I suffer from GERD. GERD is very similar to Acid Reflux except my throat can't really close from the bottom and acid can and will rise up at any time. However it was very informative to see that tea(which is usually my go to drink when I'm sick) doesn't really help.

  10. I was absolutely cool to read how what we affects our voice. I always thought what we eat affected us physically not internally. It made me feel shamed of how I was using my voice. And sometimes I wake up and my mouth is dry so that sleeping with a bowl of water by the fan was a great idea. I enjoyed the reading!

  11. I definitely drink before I perform comedy and I used to drink waaaay too much before shows and I'm sure that the vomiting that came along with that didn't help my voice at all. I do hydrate a lot whenever I'm talking for extended periods of time (i.e. at work) and I've definitely felt heartburn effect my voice, I can actually feel it burning what feels like my vocal folds.

  12. It was interesting to read how much water a day we should actually be drinking. I always knew I needed to keep hydrated but I never thought that I should be drinking upwards of 2 liters of water a day! I am going to start adding more and more water to my diet. Also, I didn't realize that caffeine actually draws water out of the body and I will be careful about how much soda or coffee I have after becoming aware of that. It is so interesting how much what we eat and drink affects everything, even out vocal health!

  13. One of the things that i thought about the most after reading this article is that a balanced diet is really one of the things that your voice needs. I thought about this the most because I usually don't participate in a balanced diet and that my voice can be restricted because of it. I would really like to try out and see how my voice feels based on different intake of proteins, carbs, sugar, etc.
