Comments on the Reading Intro - pg. 38

For the mid-term, you will need to know the following material:

  • A detailed explanation of the Vocal Process
  • How tension & habits limit, block & suppress the voice
  • Common physical tensions 
  • What is centre and why is it important

  1. As I was reading, I was trying to imagine what she was saying and apply it specifically to me. I started noticing more how much shoulder tension I carry even sitting down reading a book. Once I improved my posture it became so much easier to take deep breaths. I also realized how often I shift into the denial position and how I can be opposed to centre without even being aware of it.

  2. Throughout the reading I realized I was trying to mimic what Rodenburg was explaing. I found myself reading the passages out loud and trying to point of flaws in my own voice and movement. When I got to the dnial and bluff position I noticed that I tend to exhibit the bluff stance position more so than the denial. I see and understand now how acting relies heavily on voice and our voice needs to be tuned like an instrument with training and exercise.

  3. I really liked the idea of centring being like a beat and it helps move the actor from strength to strength. I had previously thought of it being a place of readiness instead of one holding action, or that is consistently in motion already. Another new idea was when she said, " You aren't training to reinforce what you can already do but to move into new and dramatic areas of change". That thought makes me excited to discover what training my body and voice can do for my work.

  4. Tension is a big problem of mine. I specifically notice how much tension i keep in my shoulders and have been trying to be conscious of it in class especially. When I read the sections on denial and bluff, I couldn't believe how accurate the explanation of denial is to the way I stand. I am hoping that the more I practice it, centre will become a more natural thing for me. Another problem I have is my shallow breathing. I am a smoker and I know this has huge effects on my voice and breathing.

  5. I found the reading to very helpful. A lot of things I read I remembered learning in class ,however, to actually sit down and read about really helped me gain a greater understanding of what we've been learning. There were a lot of "aha" moments where things really started to click for me. More specifically I found the explanation of "the Vocal Process" to be helpful. Being able to actually read about it and study it, I feel has benefited me. I also enjoyed the section including the different stretches. I was able to try them and I found them to be very helpful for warming up.

I was very enlightened by Patsy's explanation of the "Vocal Process"'I remember learning about the of the elements of the process in class but it was helpful to hear being explained by someone else. While reading each part I would practice finding and releasing tension, working on finding my centre and doing the stretches and all of these exercises even though you may not think would help release tensions actually do. It was very eye opening to all of the way that it helped me release that tension and become loosen and have my voice loosen up

  7. I thought it was very neat how she explained how the voice physically worked. it will help me visualize how to speak more clearly and from my core. The step by step process was explained very well. Thinking about the power of voice coming from the earth is an interesting concept. If I speak from my core and bring energy from the ground i think my breath and voice will both benefit from being more supported.

  8. The reading was definitely helpful especially since I do hold a lot of tension without even realizing it, especially in my shoulders. Correctly breathing and gaining more awareness of my body has helped me with the power of my voice and controlling my breathing.

  9. Wow. I had no idea how little I knew about the art of performance. I was very intrigued with how intricate, intense, and vital vocal work is, and actually concerned as to how i managed to even make it this far without such knowledge. I picked up a lot on how the level of your success is directly equivalent to the sum of your efforts. I noticed how difficult the process of becoming vocally aware and trained can be, but I also noticed that it certainly is obtainable. What grabbed my attention the most, however, was how little we know about our own bodies. It blew my mind that the majority of our vocal challenges stem from physical challenges, most of which, are unnoticed by our own selves. I found it interesting that one of the most vital steps in vocal training, is discovering and releasing physical and mental tensions....only because i never knew i could be suffering from certain tensions and have no idea! Im very excited to learn more as this class goes on, and as we finish this book. I feel as though recognizing my personal tensions within my mind, body, and spirit, not only will benefit me as an actor/performer, but also as an individual. I really enjoyed this text, there are almost too many questions and comments for me to even formulate an opinion other than...AMAZING!!!

  10. Before reading this passage I never realized how involved our muscles are in the voice process. There's a lot of body awareness that goes on and it makes me so much more confident when I'm able to just let go and breathe. I never really realized how much I hold my breath and how much stress I hold in my neck. The passage really brought me to another place with my body and voice awareness. Before reading it I strictly thought your voice was just a sound you create but have little to no control over.

  11. For me, I know tension can be very evident in my breath. Usually, the more tense I am the more shallow my breath is. So finding my center is important because that's where my voice should come from. It shouldn't come from my chest and throat and many times when I'm tense that very easily happens.
